Name Writing Practice Books
Name Necklaces

NAME WRITING BOOKS

To assist the children with learning to write their first names with the first letter being upper case and the rest of the letters lower case, we introduced name writing practice books today. Each child has his/her own book which is stored in his/her "mailbox". We are asking the children to complete 2 practice pages in their book each week. Once they feel confident with writing their first names, we will move on to working on last names.

We added a new addition game using dice to our "Activity Shelf". Children use the page below to record their answers.
In the photo below, the child rolled the dice and adds up the total number of dots on both dice. He then colors the numerical answer on his paper.
In the photo below, children are dropping marbles into a container of flour which simulates what a meteor does when it crashes on to the moon, leaving a crater.

COINS FOR HAITI

In class today, we had a discussion about the earthquake in Haiti. We explained what happens during an earthquake and that they rarely happen in Ohio--particularly large, damaging ones. We then discussed ways to help the people in Haiti since they are so far away from us. The children know that we will be collecting coins at school that will eventually be sent to Haiti. (One little boy commented that he will be going on Spring Break to a place close to Haiti and perhaps he could drop off the money to the people when he goes there.) We encouraged the children to "earn" coins by doing jobs/chores around the house. The children are very excited about collecting coins to help the people in Haiti. Thank you for supporting their interest and motivation at home!

Please be sure to practice reading with your child at least once a day and keep track of how many times your child reads the book to you on the form in his/her bag. As a reminder, your child's bag with his/her book and tally sheet should be returned on Thursday. Your child will have the opportunity to read with a teacher on Thursday or Friday. Next Monday, your child will choose another book to bring home to practice reading. Remember, we want this to be an enjoyable experience for your child. You may assist him/her as much as needed.
