SECOND STEP

Today we introduced a program in class called Second Step. We explained to the children that it is a time that we are going to learn about our feelings and how to treat others POLITELY and with KINDNESS. The goal of this program is to build your child's social skills and self-esteem by giving him/her tools to solve everyday problems.

Children who learn and use the skills presented in this program are more likely to get along with other people and do better in school.

The Second Step lessons are divided into three areas:
1. Empathy Training
Children learn to: identify feelings (happy, sad, mad, scared, etc.)
predict how other people feel (by reading body language)
show others they care

2. Impulse Control
Children learn to: solve problems
perform social skills (sharing, taking turns, etc.)

3. Anger Management
Children learn to: calm down
redirect their feelings in more positive ways

We will provide you with weekly updates here on the BLOG to let you know what your child is learning in the Second Step lessons. We encourage you to take some time to discuss the lessons with your child as this will help him/her to use the new skills at home. We are happy to hear your thoughts about the Second Step program.
